The Peyton Brooks FBI books pick up after the original San Francisco homicide run and move Peyton into a bigger, stranger branch of law enforcement. She joins the Ghost Squad, an FBI team that investigates cases with supposedly paranormal explanations. On paper, that means zombies, mermaids, werewolves, vampires, and the rest. In practice, it means Peyton spends each book figuring out what real crime is hiding underneath the myth.
That setup gives the series a fun hook without changing Peyton into a completely different character. She still works like a detective. She still follows evidence, pushes past bad assumptions, and gets impatient with anything that wastes time. The difference is scale. Instead of staying mostly in San Francisco, the Ghost Squad books travel widely, from the Delta and Hollywood to London, the Yucatan, Kauai, Hamburg, Whistler, and Las Vegas.
The monster names are bait. The real work is still detection.
That balance is the series' main appeal. Books like Zombies in the Delta, Mermaids in the Pacific, and Werewolves in London let Hamilton play with folklore and atmosphere, but the heart of the stories stays procedural. Because the canvas is larger, these books feel a little more adventurous than the original Peyton Brooks mysteries. There is more travel, more institutional teamwork, and more emphasis on the special-mission nature of Peyton's job. At the same time, they still reward readers who like recurring characters and the steady build of a long-running series. Peyton remains the anchor.
If you want crime novels with a paranormal wrapper, this is a strong match. The Ghost Squad books keep one foot in investigation and one foot in legend, which makes them easy to recommend to readers who enjoy mysteries but want something with a slightly stranger edge.
