Series background & context

Set in wartime Hull, the Yorkshire Blitz books follow the families of Jubilee Row as bombs fall, sirens wail and ordinary neighbours try to hold their street together. Each novel focuses on a different woman, but the same handful of houses, back yards and shelter queues link the stories into one long, shared history.

A Mother’s Journey opens the trilogy in 1940, when young widow Edie Copeland arrives on Jubilee Row with a suitcase, a secret and very few plans. She is wary of new friendships, yet soon crosses paths with warm hearted neighbours like the Maguire and Scuttle families, as well as people who would rather judge than help. Air raids over Hull push everyone into the same shelters and back kitchens, where loyalties are tested and the truth is harder to hide.

In A Sister’s Wish the focus widens as the Blitz intensifies. The street is still reeling from earlier losses, and grief sits beside everyday worries about rents, rations and wayward husbands. Capable Ruby Maguire does her best to keep spirits up and her younger sister Pearl out of trouble, while Iris Fletcher returns home from hospital after a devastating bereavement. Around them, friendships, romances and old grudges keep shifting as the sirens sound night after night.

By A Daughter’s Hope it is 1942 and Jubilee Row is learning how to rebuild after the worst of the raids. The next generation is ready to leave, with twins Sybil and Maudie Maguire joining the WAAFs and discovering that service life is far tougher than the posters suggested. Back home, their older sister Florence has given up on love until a visiting American officer makes her look again at the future she thought was closed.

Across the three books Douglas blends large scale events, from air raids to blackouts, with the small details that make up life on a working class street. Readers spend time in factories, typing pools and Women's Voluntary Service posts as well as cramped parlours and back alleys. The focus stays on resilience, humour and neighbourly kindness, even when the characters face gossip, prejudice and painful choices.

If you enjoy sagas where one street becomes a whole world, the Yorkshire Blitz trilogy gives you the chance to settle in with the residents of Jubilee Row and watch their lives unfold across the war years.
