Series background & context

The Houses of Yorkshire series moves north to England’s vast moorland counties, where weathered estates hold family secrets as surely as they hold land and title. Each novel features a new house, a new heroine, and a fresh tangle of inheritance, danger, and unexpected romance.

In The Letter from Briarton Park, orphan raised Cassandra Hale has made a life teaching at a school, only to have everything upended by a deathbed confession and a long delayed letter hinting at the truth of her parentage. Her journey to Briarton Park draws her into the household of widower James Warrington and his young daughters, where local gossip, half told stories, and a growing affection force her to question what belonging really means.

The series grows more overtly suspenseful in In the Shelter of Hollythorne House. Young widow Charlotte Grey discovers that her late husband’s business dealings have left enemies in their wake. Fleeing to her childhood home with her infant son, she finds that the watchman assigned to protect them is Anthony Welbourne, the first love her family once forbade. Threats around the estate and unfinished business between Charlotte and Anthony give this story a strong blend of protection, second chances, and moral reckoning.

Danger in these books tends to creep in quietly, through unsigned notes, nighttime footsteps, and the slow realization that trusted people may have mixed motives.

The third novel, The Cloverton Charade, brings the focus inside a glittering house party, where rival antiquities experts Olivia Brannon and Lucas Avery are both hired to appraise a famed collection. Old family feuds, counterfeit pieces, and shifting alliances turn Cloverton Hall into a contained mystery, while the relationship between two dedicated professionals unfolds with a mix of friction and respect.

Taken together, the Houses of Yorkshire stories offer Regency romance with a slightly darker edge, set among drawing rooms, village streets, and wide open moors. Readers who enjoy house centered mysteries, capable heroines, and low spice love stories threaded with questions of trust and calling will find plenty to settle into here, whether they read the books alone or as an interconnected whole.
