Sam's closest partner is Sergeant Surendranath Banerjee, often called Surrender-not. The cases change shape from book to book. A Necessary Evil moves into a princely state after the murder of a maharaja's son. Death in the East ties Sam's past in London to danger in Assam. The Shadows of Men pushes the pair into rising communal tension, while The Burning Grounds brings them into the world of Indian cinema and a murder that reconnects old allies. Some novels work well as stand-alone mysteries, but together they build a longer story about loyalty, addiction, ambition, and the cost of serving a system that is cracking.

These are historical mysteries, but they read with the urgency of modern crime fiction.

If you're trying to place the tone, think classic detective work mixed with political pressure and a very strong sense of place. There are clues, interviews, false leads, and locked doors, but also hard questions about empire, nationalism, identity, and who gets to define justice. The series never forgets that solving a case in colonial India is not the same as restoring order. Often the order itself is part of the problem.

What makes the books stick is the relationship at the center. Sam and Suren respect each other, irritate each other, and repeatedly test what friendship can survive. That gives the series its heartbeat.
