Wrens Books in Order

The Wrens series takes Vicki Beeby's wartime fiction north to Orkney, where three newly trained members of the Women's Royal Naval Service are posted far from the busy naval life they imagined. The first book, A New Start for the Wrens, introduces Iris Tredwick, Mary and Sally, three very different young women who are sent to a remote signal station instead of somewhere grander or more familiar. That distance matters. These books are shaped by wind, sea, isolation and the sense that the war can reach even the edge of the map.

Orkney really does a lot of the heavy lifting here.

The setting around Scapa Flow gives the series a slightly different feel from Beeby's air force books. The women are dealing with signals, ships, sea defences and the constant threat of enemy action in coastal waters. The work may look quiet from the outside, but the danger is real. If the wrong message is missed, or if a mine or submarine slips through the defences, people die. The remoteness also means the characters cannot easily escape each other, so friendships, frictions and romances all land with a bit more force.

Each book shifts the emotional center while keeping the same trio in view. A New Start for the Wrens leans most heavily on Iris, who has to unlearn some of her old assumptions as she adjusts to military life and grows close to people she might once have overlooked. A Wrens' Wartime Christmas brings Mary forward, with grief from the loss of her fiancé still shaping her life even as new affection begins to creep in. Hopeful Hearts for the Wrens then gives Sally the spotlight, letting her romantic hopes collide with wartime reality in a way that is both tender and tense.

These books are gentler in style than a straight military thriller, but they never forget the war.

Part of the appeal is the balance Beeby strikes between comfort and suspense. There are Christmas scenes, close friendships, teasing flirtation and the day-to-day rhythms of station life. But there is also the question of whether the enemy has help nearby, whether local defences are good enough, and whether private loyalties can survive the strain of wartime secrets. The series also uses the island setting well, making Orkney feel both beautiful and vulnerable, a place where everyone is seen and yet not everything is known.

If you want wartime fiction with a strong sense of place, this is probably the best entry point into Beeby's work. The books are full of salt air, signal traffic and emotional upheaval, but they stay anchored in friendship all the way through. A New Start for the Wrens, A Wrens' Wartime Christmas and Hopeful Hearts for the Wrens are best read in order, because the changes in the women's relationships and confidence are one of the real pleasures of the series.
