Author bio

Vicki Beeby writes World War II historical fiction with women at the center of the story. Her novels are interested in the work women did, the friendships they built, and the pressure of carrying on when history is moving fast around them. If you like wartime fiction that mixes romance, danger and day-to-day working life, her books make a very easy place to settle in.

She did not begin as a full-time writer. Her first job was as a civil engineer on a sewage treatment project, and after that she worked as a maths teacher and education consultant before turning freelance to make more room for fiction. One stop along the way even took her to Botswana, where she taught in the late 1990s.

Writing, though, was always there.

Beeby has said that she always wanted to be an author, and for years she kept a diary, which gave her the habit of writing regularly. Later, when online fan fiction communities became easier to find, she began posting her own work and discovered that readers were responding to it. That encouragement mattered. It helped turn a private hobby into something more serious, and from there she moved on to writing original fiction.

Her first published novels were medieval romances written under the name Tora Williams. She enjoyed that period, but the big turning point for her later career came when the Second World War setting clicked into place. A visit to the RAF Museum in Cosford sparked a flood of ideas, and she became especially interested in the women who appear at the edges of old war films, doing vital jobs while the attention stays elsewhere. That curiosity led directly to The Ops Room Girls, the first of her wartime sagas under her own name.

That book introduced a pattern readers now know well in her work. She takes an overlooked wartime role, ops room plotters, Wrens, radio operators, nursing orderlies, and builds a story around the women doing the job. The Ops Room Girls was followed by Christmas with the Ops Room Girls and Victory for the Ops Room Girls, then by the Orkney-set Wrens novels and the Bomber Command books. Her 2022 novel A New Start for the Wrens went on to win the Romantic Novelists' Association Romantic Saga Award in 2023.

A lot of readers come to Beeby for the same reasons. Her books are warm without feeling soft, romantic without losing sight of wartime strain, and packed with female friendships that feel earned rather than decorative. The Girls of Bomber Command shows how well she handles mystery and fear inside a bomber station community, while Courage for the Flying Nightingales turns to air ambulance crews and the split-second pressure of caring for patients in the air.

She is also a research-heavy writer, though she wears that lightly on the page. She has talked about visiting museums, archives and historic sites, and about teaching herself Morse code while working on the Wrens books. A trip to Orkney even gave her the original spark for that series. The result is fiction that feels grounded in real places and real jobs, without ever reading like homework.

Now she lives in Shropshire, where she writes, reads, walks and enjoys travelling to far-off places by train. She has also joked that her house does not contain nearly enough bookshelves, which feels like exactly the right detail for someone who grew up wanting a life built around stories.
