Series background & context

World of the Lupi is a long-running urban fantasy setting where werewolves live in organized clans, magic is real, and the most dangerous predators don’t always have fangs. The stories follow Lily Yu, an FBI agent whose “weird” cases keep turning into something much bigger.

Lily starts as a by-the-book investigator, not a chosen one. But her work puts her in the path of the Lupi—powerful werewolves with deep traditions, strict rules, and political leadership that can clash with human law. Rule Turner, a high-ranking Lupi, becomes Lily’s partner in the field and her closest tie to a world most people don’t know exists.

The cases are the engine.

Each book usually kicks off with a crime or threat that has one foot in the human world and one foot in the supernatural. Lily has to sort out what’s real, what’s staged, and what someone wants her to believe. That means interviews and evidence, but it also means navigating pack territories, old grudges, and the uncomfortable fact that some “suspects” can outfight a SWAT team.

The Lupi aren’t the only players. Other kinds of shifters and magic-users step into the stories, and the supernatural world has its own politics, treaties, and taboos. Some conflicts play out like a straight manhunt; others feel closer to diplomacy, with Lily trying to keep a case from turning into a supernatural incident that the public can’t ignore.

The romance between Lily and Rule is a major thread, but it’s woven into the plot rather than replacing it. Their relationship has to survive work stress, cultural differences, and the Lupi expectation that loyalty comes before comfort. As more allies join their orbit, the series builds a strong sense of team—people who show up even when the rules say they shouldn’t.

Over time, the world expands to include bigger stakes. Demonic forces, sorcery, and supernatural power struggles push the stories beyond single investigations into longer arcs that build from book to book. The tone stays closer to paranormal suspense than gothic horror: tense, action-heavy, and focused on solving the problem in front of you.

If you’re new to the series, start at the beginning and read in order. Character relationships, world rules, and ongoing conflicts stack up, and the payoff is seeing Lily grow from “FBI agent on a strange case” into someone who can hold her own in the Lupi’s world. It’s a world that rewards paying attention.
