Series background & context
The World of Samar books are M.L. Hamilton's biggest secondary-world fantasy project, and they read like a saga built to sprawl. The series is set on the distant planet Samar, a place shaped by kingdoms, protectorates, faith, bloodlines, and powers that are not ordinary even by fantasy standards. It begins with Emerald and then keeps widening, book by book, into a story about families, inheritance, and what people do with the kind of destiny they never asked for.
One useful way to think about Samar is as a story of succession. The series follows the lives of Eldon's chosen, and later volumes move through their children, heirs, allies, rivals, and descendants. The early part of the arc centers on Kiameron and his sons, who are caught in the struggle to free Loden from the oppressive grip of the depot Gava. Later books widen the focus again, showing how the consequences of one generation keep landing on the next.
This is a family saga dressed as epic fantasy.
Titles like The Heirs of Eldon, The Star of Eldon, The Scions of Eldon, and The Followers of Eldon are a clue to what Hamilton is doing. She is less interested in isolated quests than in continuity. People inherit power, mistakes, enemies, duties, and grief. They also inherit hope, which matters just as much in a series this large.
The world itself sounds broad enough to support that scale. The Seven Protectorates, shifting crowns, competing leaders, and supernatural gifts all create a political landscape where private decisions can turn public fast. Some books lean closer to war and rulership, while others focus more tightly on one branch of the family line, but they all feed the same larger picture.
If you like epic fantasy that keeps expanding rather than resetting, Samar is a strong fit. The books reward reading in order, because lineage and consequence matter so much, but they are not written in an airy, distant style. Hamilton keeps the emotional stakes close even when the setting is huge. That helps the series feel inviting rather than overwhelming, especially once you are a few books in and the names of Eldon's line start to feel like home.
