Series background & context

The Wonder Cats books are Harper Lin's coziest paranormal series, but they are also one of her darkest. The main trio is Cath Greenstone, her cousin Bea, and their hippie Aunt Astrid, who live in Wonder Falls near the mystical Niagara Falls and run the Brew-Ha-Ha cafe. They are witches hiding in plain sight. Their cats, Treacle, Peanut Butter, and Marshmallow, are not ordinary pets either. They are magical, useful, and often much more aware of danger than the humans around them.

Right from A Hiss-tory of Magic, the series makes clear that these mysteries are bigger than a single murder. A baker is killed, the cafe is destroyed, and a powerful family spell book disappears. That missing heirloom opens the door to a longer story about old magic, family history, dangerous outsiders, and threats that can reach far beyond one town. Later books keep the murder-mystery structure, but the cases often come with demons, necromancy, haunted houses, predatory shadows, suspicious covens, and things in the woods that are definitely not human.

Cath is the emotional center of the series. She is observant, compassionate, and often the first to sense when something is wrong. Bea and Astrid give the books their energy and contrast. Bea is part of the family team but has her own life and future at stake, while Astrid is warm, eccentric, and sometimes reckless in ways that make the danger feel even closer. The cats are part of the appeal too, especially Treacle, whose connection to Cath helps move both the emotional and supernatural parts of the story.

This series gets spooky fast.

Wonder Falls is the kind of setting that looks charming on the surface and turns stranger the longer you stay. Cemeteries, bridges, snow-covered streets, isolated farms, old family homes, and hidden rooms all play a part. That makes the town feel like more than a backdrop. It is a place shaped by secrets, old power, and the uneasy feeling that normal rules do not fully apply.

Even with all that, the books still read like cozy mysteries. There is a family business, recurring love interests and detectives, holiday scenes, and the steady comfort of returning to the same people and place. The paranormal elements raise the stakes, but the series stays rooted in character, routine, and the question of who or what is behind the latest death.

If you like witches, talking-to-cats energy, and mysteries that are a little creepier than the average cozy, the Wonder Cats books are one of Harper Lin's most distinctive series. They balance warmth and menace very well, and they reward readers who enjoy both small-town comfort and supernatural trouble.
