Series background & context
The Women at War series gathers three standalone but thematically linked novels about women whose lives are overturned by twentieth century conflicts. Each book focuses on a different heroine facing love, loss and danger as war or its aftermath forces them to make impossible choices.
In Jessie's Promise, set just after the First World War, London nurse Jessie Hale loses her hospital job and travels to rural Devon to become nursemaid at Kendlebury Hall. There she finds a household in pieces: a shell shocked father, a distant mother, grieving grandparents and children who badly need stability. As Jessie grows attached to the family and to Captain Kendle himself, she must balance compassion with her own hopes for the future.
The Runaway Wife moves to the roaring twenties in London. Country girl Annabel Tarleton is swept off her feet by rich, charming Richard Hansen, only to discover the cruelty that lies behind his polished manners. Trapped in an abusive marriage and pregnant, she flees the privilege that once dazzled her and tries to build an independent life while a powerful husband uses every resource to hunt her down.
Set at the outbreak of the Second World War, Hetty's Secret War weaves together several women's stories. Georgie lives in fear for the man she loves, now on a secret mission overseas. Beth throws herself into wartime work, only to find herself a widow far sooner than she imagined. Hetty, caught in occupied France, ends up at a chateau where she joins the resistance and discovers strengths she never knew she had.
Although the settings range from Devon estates to Paris safe houses, the books share a focus on resilience, friendship and the hard edges of romance in dangerous times. Clarke does not gloss over grief, poverty or violence, but she also gives her heroines resourcefulness, loyal friends and, often, a second chance at happiness.
The novels can be read in any order, since characters do not carry across, but reading the full set gives a broad picture of how war reshaped women's roles at home, in service and on the front line.
