Series background & context

The Mulberry Lane books follow a tangle of families who live and work around a single East End street from the late 1930s into the swinging sixties. At the heart of the series are Peggy Ashley, later Peggy Ronoscki, her pub The Pig and Whistle, and the neighbours who treat the lane as their extended family.

Early novels such as The Girls of Mulberry Lane and A Wedding at Mulberry Lane are set on the eve of war and through the Blitz. Young women like Maureen, Janet and Nellie wrestle with strict fathers, forbidden romances and the pull between duty and dreams. As bombs fall and loved ones leave for the forces, the pub kitchen and tiny front rooms become places where bad news is shared, babies are born and plans for the future are quietly laid.

Middle books, including Mulberry Lane Babies, New Arrivals at Mulberry Lane and The Women of Mulberry Lane, are steeped in wartime atmosphere. Rationing bites, blackouts hide real danger in the alleys, and men come home changed or not at all. Newcomers like Rose Merchant arrive carrying secrets, marriages are tested by absence and betrayal, and Peggy herself must juggle family loyalties with hard business choices.

Later in the series, with titles such as A Reunion at Mulberry Lane, Stormy Days On Mulberry Lane and A New Dawn on Mulberry Lane, the focus shifts to the long tail of war. The stories move into the 1950s as children grow up, careers change and families consider leaving the lane for new opportunities. Peggy's guesthouse, Fay's and Maggie's restaurant ventures and overseas trips show how far this tight community has come.

The final books, Life and Love at Mulberry Lane and Last Orders at Mulberry Lane, push on into the early 1960s. Redevelopment plans threaten to sweep away the old streets altogether, even as the younger generation embraces pop music, travel and more modern attitudes. The question becomes whether Mulberry Lane is a physical place or something the characters can carry with them into a new era.

Throughout, the tone is warm, busy and emotional rather than grand. The series leans into everyday detail, from market stalls to washing lines, and celebrates friendship and chosen family while facing up to bereavement, infidelity and economic hardship. Readers who like to settle into a long-running world will find plenty of familiar faces to follow from book to book.
