Winterspell Books in Order

The Winterspell books are a small, self-contained corner of Claire Legrand's catalogue, but they carry a lot of atmosphere. At the center is Winterspell, a dark retelling of The Nutcracker that mixes alternate-history New York, faerie politics, murder, and romance. Alongside it is Summerfall, a prequel novella that shows an earlier generation in the kingdom of Cane and explains some of the heartbreak sitting underneath the main novel.

Summerfall is shorter, but it matters. It follows Rinka, a faery trying to hold together a fragile peace between faeries and humans, and Alban Somerhart, a reluctant human king trapped inside political duty. Their relationship gives the larger story some of its emotional history. You can read the novella as a setup, but it works especially well if you want a clearer sense of why Cane feels so wounded by the time Winterspell begins.

It starts sad, and it stays complicated.

The main book follows Clara Stole, who is dealing with the brutal murder of her mother, the corruption of her father, and the growing sense that something unnatural is moving under the city she knows. When her father is abducted and her younger sister is put at risk, Clara ends up crossing into Cane with Nicholas, the kingdom's lost prince. Cane is not a pretty toy-box winterland. It is beautiful, cold, damaged, and under the rule of the faerie queen Anise, whose regime has pushed humans to the edge.

That blend is what makes this set interesting. The books pull from fairy tale, but they also lean into gang politics, family grief, class strain, and the way power warps people. Clara is not written as a delicate dreamer. She is anxious, stubborn, brave when she has to be, and very aware that survival may require ugly choices. The result is a story with romance in it, but also real menace.

If you come to these books expecting something sugary, you will be surprised. If you want a wintry fantasy with sharp edges, they are a better fit. The atmosphere is thick, the violence is not completely softened, and the faeries feel dangerous in the old-fashioned sense.

As for reading order, Winterspell is the main event. Summerfall adds background, extra political context, and a tragic love story that casts a longer shadow over Cane. Together they make a nice two-book visit to one of Legrand's most theatrical worlds.
