Foxheart and Thornlight belong to the same story world, the Vale, but they do not work like a tight sequel pair. Foxheart introduces the setting through one girl's lonely, scrappy adventure. Thornlight returns later with new leads, a darker threat, and the sense that stories become legends very quickly in this world.

At the center of Foxheart is Quicksilver, a twelve-year-old thief in Willow-on-the-River who mostly trusts her dog, Fox, and not much else. She steals to survive, keeps her feelings locked down, and tells herself that being alone is safer than needing anyone. Then she stumbles into forbidden magic, and the book opens outward from a street-level survival story into a much bigger fantasy quest. Her bond with Fox, and her uneasy friendship with Sly Boots, gives the novel its emotional core.

The Vale matters here. It feels old, half wild, and full of rules that ordinary people do not entirely understand. Magic is supposed to be gone. Of course, it is not. That gap between what people believe and what is actually true drives a lot of the suspense. So does Legrand's love of strange, memorable creatures and landscapes that feel enchanted and a little dangerous at the same time.

This is classic quest fantasy with muddy boots and a bruised heart.

Thornlight uses the same world in a slightly different way. Instead of following Quicksilver as the main lead, it centers on twins Brier and Thorn, plus Queen Celestyna, while a creeping evil called the Gulgot poisons the land and the lightning the Vale depends on begins to vanish. Brier is bold and gifted. Thorn is quieter, gentler, and underestimated. That matters. One of the nicest things about this companion book is that it makes room for soft strength, and treats kindness as something powerful rather than weak.

Together, the two books give you a fuller picture of the Vale. You get thieves and unicorns, royal curses and witches, magic quests and emotional wounds that do not disappear just because the adventure has started. There is danger, yes, but the through line is really about truth, friendship, and learning how to care for other people without losing yourself.

If you are wondering about reading order, start with Foxheart. It does the work of showing you how the world feels, and it lets Quicksilver land as the rumor, memory, and legend she becomes in Thornlight. If you like middle grade fantasy that is adventurous but emotionally honest, this is one of Legrand's clearest examples of what she does well.
