Set in the Great Smoky Mountains around 1900, the Willa books trade grand houses for deep woods, hidden caves, and old mountain trails. Willa is a young Faeran night-spirit, an orphan, and the best thief in her clan. She has been taught that humans, or day-folk, are dangerous destroyers of the forest, so she slips into their cabins at night and steals what her people need.

In Willa of the Wood, that worldview starts to crack. After Willa is injured and stranded outside the safe boundaries of her clan, she has to rely on her wits, the old powers passed down from her grandmother, and help from creatures and people she was raised to fear. The book is a survival story, but it is also about learning that the world is more complicated than the stories powerful people tell.

That matters because nature is not just scenery in this series. The forest is home, memory, shelter, and source of magic. The second book keeps the intimate feeling of Willa's voice, but it raises the stakes with questions about deforestation, responsibility, and how far someone should go to defend the living world they love. The battles are physical, but the hardest choices are often ethical.

The tone here is darker and more wilderness-driven than Serafina, though it still has the same Beatty mix of suspense, heart, and strong young heroines. Expect night raids, secret dwellings, strange creatures, moral tension, and a lot of attention to the feel of bark, rain, stone, and mountain light. If you want fantasy that cares about belonging, family, and the cost of protecting a place, Willa is a compact series with real emotional weight.
