Will Lavender is a Kentucky novelist whose thrillers turn classrooms, reading lists, and intellectual games into places where the stakes get very real. Lavender was born in Whitley City, Kentucky, in 1967. He studied English at Centre College, then earned an MFA in creative writing from Bard College. Before publishing novels, he wrote short fiction for small literary journals, learning the patient work of shaping scenes, voices, and structure.

Then he found his way to thrillers.

Lavender has said that he once looked down on crime fiction because he did not know it well. Reading more widely changed his mind. He came to appreciate books that move quickly, set traps for the reader, and still leave room for questions about character and motive. That interest became the foundation for his own brand of academic suspense.

Teaching also gave him useful material. Lavender taught writing and literature for several years at colleges in Louisville, Kentucky, and southern Indiana. He noticed the odd mix of trust, pressure, curiosity, and authority that can exist in a classroom, especially when students are trying to figure out what a professor really wants from them.

It was a natural setting for trouble.

His debut, Obedience, arrived in 2008. The novel follows three students at Indiana's Winchester University after an unsettling professor gives them an assignment: solve the disappearance of a girl named Polly before six weeks run out. What begins as a logic exercise starts to overlap with their own lives, and the line between a made-up case and a real danger becomes hard to see. The book became a New York Times bestseller and was published in numerous languages.

Dominance returns to the college world, but with a different kind of game. Its central figure is Alex Shipley, a Harvard professor who once took a strange night class taught by Richard Aldiss, a literature professor convicted of murder. When an old classmate is killed, Alex has to revisit the class's obsession with a reclusive author and a literary puzzle that may be far more dangerous than it first appeared. The story moves between past and present, letting old clues gather new weight.

Across both novels, Lavender is interested in institutions that seem orderly from the outside, such as universities, classrooms, and scholarly communities. Inside them, he finds rivalry, ambition, secrecy, and people who can be persuaded to follow a trail farther than they should.
