Series background & context
Wild Wastes is set in a world that broke before World War II could end. A catastrophic experiment turned the heart of North America into the Waste, a scar of land where every fairy tale creature and mythological monster you can think of suddenly became real—and most of them hate humans.
Vince starts the series as a ranger, one of the few people willing and able to guide caravans, escorts, and treasure hunters through the Waste. What begins as another job quickly snowballs into responsibility for a city state, then a region, and eventually a sprawling territory full of people who look to him as their protector and ruler. The story follows him as he negotiates with new governments on both coasts, foreign powers overseas, and the inhuman factions that see humanity as prey.
The books mix harem romance, military action, and crunchy world building. Vince spends as much time setting up guilds, training armies, and managing trade as he does fighting trolls or dealing with gods. Later volumes tie directly into other Arand worlds, especially Legion and Runner’s wider universe, making Wild Wastes a key hub for readers who want the big picture of how his settings connect.
