The Whistling in the Dark books follow Sally O'Malley and her younger sister, Troo, in working-class Milwaukee at the end of the 1950s. Sally is only ten, but she takes her responsibilities seriously, especially after promising her dying father that she will keep Troo safe. That promise becomes the center of both books.

In Whistling in the Dark, the sisters' world on Vliet Street is full of friends, neighbors, games, church, gossip, and the everyday trouble of growing up. But their mother is hospitalized, the adults meant to care for them are unreliable, and someone dangerous is preying on local girls. Sally believes she knows who the man is, even when the grown-ups around her don't listen.

It is a mystery, but it is also a story about what children see when adults are looking the other way.

Sally tells the story with the mix of confidence, imagination, and misunderstanding that comes with being a child in a frightening situation. Troo is younger but has a fierce personality of her own, and their relationship gives the books much of their heart. The sisters argue, make plans, and get into trouble, but they stay connected when things become uncertain.

Good Graces picks up a year later, during the sweltering summer of 1960. Sally is still carrying the effects of the previous summer, while Troo has grown more restless and rebellious. A string of burglaries, the disappearance of an orphan, and the return of someone Sally fears put the neighborhood on edge again. Sally wants to protect her sister, but she also has to question whether she can trust her own judgment.

The two books balance suspense with humor, family life, and a strong sense of place. Milwaukee matters here, not as a backdrop but as a close-knit neighborhood where everybody notices something, though not always the right thing. Expect a child-centered historical mystery with real danger, sibling loyalty, grief, and flashes of warmth.

Start with Whistling in the Dark, then continue directly to Good Graces. The second book works best after the first because it builds on what Sally and Troo have already survived together.
