Varian Johnson Books in Order

Varian Johnson was born in 1977 and grew up in Florence, South Carolina. He has a twin brother and a younger sister, and family life, sibling energy, and everyday community ties show up again and again in his fiction. Long before he published a book, he was already the kind of kid who liked figuring things out, whether that meant numbers, machines, or stories.

He was a self-described high school geek.

Johnson did well in math and science, played baritone in marching band, and took part in academic competitions. But English, especially creative writing, mattered too. He went on to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a degree in civil engineering. Even while studying a very practical subject, he kept working on fiction, which helps explain why his books often feel both warm and carefully built.

Writing stayed with him.

After college, Johnson kept developing as a writer and later earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. For years he balanced writing with engineering work, and that background seems to suit him. His plots are often precise without feeling stiff, and his characters have to solve real problems, not just drift from scene to scene. He has also returned to Vermont College of Fine Arts as a faculty member.

His early novels were written for older readers. A Red Polka Dot in a World Full of Plaid follows a young woman searching for the truth about her father. My Life as a Rhombus and Saving Maddie both dig into teen relationships, faith, secrecy, and the kind of choices that can reshape a life. Readers who start with those books usually notice how direct his voice is. He does not hide the hard parts, but he also does not bury them under a lot of drama.

Then came the books that introduced him to a much wider middle grade audience. The Great Greene Heist turns a school election into a funny, tightly wound caper. The Parker Inheritance blends a puzzle mystery with family history and the long reach of racism in a South Carolina town, and it earned both a Coretta Scott King Author Honor and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. In Twins, created with illustrator Shannon Wright, he shifts into graphic novel form and tells a sharp, very recognizable story about sisters growing apart as middle school begins. Playing the Cards You're Dealt keeps things close to home, using a family spades tournament to explore pressure, masculinity, and what kids inherit from the adults around them.

Community matters in Johnson's work, and in his life outside the page. He was a founding member of The Brown Bookshelf, a project created to spotlight Black authors and illustrators for young readers. He now lives outside Austin, Texas, with his family. Whether he is writing a mystery, a school caper, a graphic novel, or a history title like What Were the Negro Leagues?, he tends to come back to the same idea, that young people are smart, complicated, and worth taking seriously.
