Author bio

Wesley King grew up in Ajax, Ontario, and became the kind of writer who takes young readers' worries seriously without making a story feel like homework. His books move between superheroes, basketball courts, strange underground worlds, school mysteries, and first friendships. Even when the premise gets wild, the feelings usually stay close to the ground.

He studied journalism at Carleton University, then began working on the novel that became The Vindico. That debut follows five teenagers kidnapped and trained by aging supervillains, and it set up a question King returns to often: what happens when kids are handed a role they never asked for?

The book opened the door to more adventures. The Feros continues the superhero story, while Dragons vs. Drones and Enemy of the Realm send a young codebreaker into a realm where dragons are at war with weaponized machines. King also wrote the space adventure The Incredible Space Raiders from Space! and the underground survival tale A World Below.

He likes putting ordinary kids in very unordinary situations.

King's more realistic books have become an important part of his work, too. In OCDaniel, Daniel hides the obsessive thoughts and routines that shape his days until a classmate draws him into a mystery. King has spoken openly about living with obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety, and those experiences helped him write Daniel's fears, humor, and isolation from the inside. The related novel Sara and the Search for Normal gives Sara, a key character from Daniel's story, her own path through therapy, friendship, and the pressure to seem normal.

His middle-grade novels often make room for kids who feel overlooked. Butt Sandwich & Tree follows brothers Green and Cedar as they investigate a missing necklace after Green becomes the main suspect. Benny on the Case centers on Benny, a boy with Mosaic Down syndrome, as he starts a mainstream class and tries to solve thefts at the retirement home where he lives. These books mix mystery and humor with family bonds and the awkward work of finding your place.

Sports show up often in King's stories. He grew up playing sports, and he later collaborated with Kobe Bryant on the Wizenard books, a basketball fantasy about the struggling West Bottom Badgers and their unusual coach. Training Camp and Season One use magical challenges to explore practice, teamwork, grief, and the gap between wanting to improve and knowing how.

King has also co-written Hello (From Here) with Chandler Baker, a young adult romance set during the first months of pandemic lockdown. It follows two teens trying to build a relationship while their world becomes smaller and more uncertain.

Across all these books, King gives his characters room to be scared, funny, stubborn, and hopeful.

He has spoken with students around the world, and he now lives on a windy seaside bluff in Western Newfoundland, Canada. It is a fitting home base for an author whose stories keep looking past the familiar horizon.
