Wes DeMott Books in Order

Wes DeMott was born in Roseburg, Oregon, in 1952. Soon afterward, his family moved to Guam, and his father’s Navy career, followed by defense-contract work, meant more moves over the years. New places became part of DeMott’s life early, along with a lasting interest in travel, danger, and the people caught in complicated situations.

Before he wrote novels, DeMott served in the U.S. Navy and worked as an FBI special agent in Washington, D.C. He also worked as a private investigator, security consultant, and actor. Those experiences gave him a practical feel for institutions, training, surveillance, and the uneasy choices people make when duty and self-preservation collide.

He has never presented adventure as a quiet hobby.

DeMott began writing professionally in the mid-1990s. His first novel, Walking K, arrived in 1998 and drew on his research into Vietnam-era POW issues, including official records, White House tapes, and interviews with people connected to the subject. Rather than treating history as a backdrop, he puts one man in the middle of a problem that has been ignored for far too long.

In Walking K, former POW Jacob Slaughter returns to Hanoi on a trade mission and discovers that a former cellmate may still be imprisoned. The book sets the pattern for much of DeMott’s work: political pressure, personal loyalty, and characters who find out that the official story leaves out the most important facts.

His next novel, Vapors, follows aerospace engineer Peter Jamison as a defense contract leads him toward fraud, corruption, and danger. The novel was later published in paperback as The Fund. That story earned an Independent Publisher Book Award gold medal in the thriller and mystery category, and it also reached readers in translation.

Heat Sync turns to Henry Thompson, a Navy SEAL recruited into a secret military unit. He thinks he is being prepared to kill foreign threats, then learns that his assignment is much closer to home. Later books widen the range. The Typhoon Sanction follows a CIA operative through espionage, revenge, and murders on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, while Tortuga Gold heads to the water with salvage captain Taz Keaton and a hunt tied to old pirate treasure.

Not every DeMott novel is built around a conspiracy.

Loving Zelda is a more intimate story about a writer, the woman he loves, and the strain that mental illness places on a relationship. In Toxic, former FBI agent Jack Wells confronts environmental poisoning, police militarization, and shrinking civil liberties. Across these books, DeMott returns to people who have skills, scars, and strong ideas about right and wrong, then puts them under pressure until every choice costs something.

DeMott has described himself as an adventurer, and his life outside fiction has included extensive travel and time on the water. He has shared many of those adventures with his Belgian wife, a multilingual former war-zone worker. The settings and risks in his novels often feel lived-in for a reason: he writes about the kinds of worlds he has spent years exploring.
