Author bio

Wendy Higgins was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and grew up as an Army brat, moving across five military bases before her family settled in the Washington, DC, area. That kind of childhood can make a person good at starting over, and a lot of her books have characters who are doing exactly that.

Writing came early.

When she was five, she made a homemade book called The Day the Whole Class Got the Chickenpox, illustrated it herself, copied it, and sold it to neighbors. Her mother made her give the money back, but one buyer refused and said she wanted to be able to say she had bought Wendy Higgins's first book.

Her road to being an author was not straight. After Potomac Senior High School in Dumfries, Virginia, she spent a few semesters at Longwood College, then transferred to George Mason University and earned a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing. Later she completed a master's in Curriculum and Instruction at Radford University. In between, she also worked as a flight attendant and a waitress.

She taught high school English for two years, working with ninth and twelfth graders. That time around teenagers clearly stuck with her. In an early interview, she said writing YA let her revisit the confusing, exciting edge between adolescence and adulthood, which helps explain why so many of her books care about first love, identity, and the moment when innocence starts to crack.

The big turning point came after she became a mother and started writing fiction seriously at home. The first draft of Sweet Evil arrived fast, in seven weeks, and it became her debut novel in 2012. That book introduced readers to Anna Whitt and Kaidan Rowe, and it also set the tone for what Higgins does well, high emotional stakes, forbidden attraction, and fantasy ideas that never lose sight of the romance.

Then the range widened.

She stayed with paranormal romance in Sweet Peril, Sweet Reckoning, and the Kaidan-centered companion Sweet Temptation, but she did not stay in one lane. The Great Hunt and The Great Pursuit move into fantasy with kingdoms, beasts, and political tension. See Me leans into Irish magic, Soul in Darkness retells Cupid and Psyche, and Sparks shifts into adult romance with flight attendants and a quarter-life crisis. Readers who stick with her usually come for the chemistry, the ache, and heroines forced to grow fast.

A lot of Higgins's books circle the same questions even when the settings change. What do you do with desire? How much of your future gets chosen for you? Can love make you braver, or just raise the stakes? Whether she is writing demons, royalty, apocalypse, or airport layovers, she keeps the emotional mess close to the page.

She has published both traditionally and independently, which fits a career that has never followed one neat path. These days she lives in Virginia with her family and writes full time, still moving easily between fantasy, romance, and the space where the two overlap.
