Weirdspace Books in Order

Weirdspace is Eric Brown's fast, pulpy space-opera setting, made for starships, smugglers, dangerous jobs, and threats that are much worse than the authorities first admit. Human space is controlled by the authoritarian Expansion, while the alien Vetch occupy territory of their own. Neither side is especially easy to trust.

The first book, The Devil's Nebula, follows Captain Ed Carew and the crew of the small ship A Long Way From Home. Ed, ex-marine Lania Takiomar, and ex-convict Gord Neffard survive by operating close to the legal line. When the Expansion catches them leaving forbidden Vetch territory, they are given a choice: execution, or a near-impossible mission into the Devil's Nebula.

It is not a good choice.

Their search concerns a human colony ship that disappeared a century earlier, but the journey reveals a far larger danger. The Weird are entities from another dimension, able to influence and infest people. They threaten humans and Vetch alike, which means old enemies may have to cooperate if either civilization is going to survive.

Satan's Reach shifts the focus to Den Harper, a telepath who once worked for the Expansion by reading the minds of criminals and political targets. He escaped that work, only to find himself pursued across lawless space by a bounty hunter. Rescuing an orphaned girl puts him directly in the path of the Weird and gives the Expansion fresh reason to want him back.

The books are built for momentum. Brown gives the setting a grim political edge, but the stories move through chases, escapes, shootouts, alien encounters, and questionable bargains. The Weird add a touch of cosmic horror to the space adventure, making the danger feel less like an ordinary invasion and more like something that can get inside a person's mind.

This is also a shared world, so the setting has room for other writers and stories. Brown's entries establish its ground rules and its uneasy alliances. His protagonists are flawed survivors rather than spotless heroes, which fits a universe where the people in charge may be as dangerous as the monsters beyond the border.

Start with The Devil's Nebula, then read Satan's Reach. The second book broadens the threat and works best once the tensions between the Expansion, the Vetch, and the Weird are in place.
