Weathering the Storm, written by Kenny Soward with Mike Kraus, is a near-future disaster series about a hurricane season that turns into a national emergency. It begins with extreme weather, but the storms are only part of the problem. An unknown enemy is using the chaos to strike at infrastructure and make a bad situation much worse.

Jake Walton is stranded in Boston at a technology conference while his wife, Sara, and their children are at the family's cabin in Tennessee. Multiple Category Five hurricanes batter the East Coast, travel becomes dangerous, and Jake's first goal is painfully clear: get back to his family.

Sara and the children face their own danger at the cabin, where they become tangled in a conspiracy that reaches beyond the weather. That split perspective gives the series its momentum. Jake has to cross a damaged country, while Sara has to protect the children and understand why their family has become part of a much larger threat.

The six books follow the Waltons through worsening conditions. Tempest introduces the separation, the storms, and the attacks on key systems. Surge and Inferno deepen the crisis as the family runs out of safe options. Windburn, Downburst, and Frostpoint continue the road home while the national situation becomes more unstable.

This is a fast disaster thriller with an espionage angle. The weather provides the immediate danger, but the series also cares about communication failures, damaged roads, shortages, frightened communities, and the vulnerability of people who are far from home when everything changes.

Read in order, starting with Tempest. The emotional point of the series is the distance between Jake and Sara's family, so the later books work best when that separation and its consequences are allowed to build.
