Series background & context

The We Shouldn't series lives in that very specific romance lane where the attraction is obvious, the timing is terrible, and everybody involved knows this is a bad idea long before anyone stops. These are off-limits contemporary romances with a small-town heart and a strong streak of family-and-friends crossover.

Monroe's own tagline for the series, small town meets brother's best friend, is a good shortcut, but it is a little broader than that in practice. These books are all about the people you were not supposed to want, your brother's best friend, your best friend's sister, the guy who has been around forever, the man everyone else thinks is wrong for you, or the one person who brings all your defenses up on sight.

That built-in history matters.

Because the couples usually know each other already, the books can start with immediate tension instead of slow introductions. There are old kisses, long crushes, family friendships, shared reputations, and the awkward reality that if things go wrong, it will not just be two people feeling weird. The whole town, or at least the whole friend group, is going to know.

The four titles show Monroe playing with slightly different variations on the same emotional problem. Shouldn't Want You starts with a classic brother's-best-friend spark. Can't Have You, Don't Need You, and Won't Miss You keep that push-pull energy going while shifting the exact relationship dynamics. Across the series, the heroes tend to be steady, protective, and deeply inconvenient. The heroines are often trying to prove something, start over, or stop caring about a man they were definitely never meant to care about this much.

The small-town setting gives the books warmth without making them soft. There is community here, but also scrutiny. People remember your younger self. Family opinions carry weight. Private feelings are rarely private for long. That is part of what makes the romances satisfying. The characters have to choose each other in full view of everyone who thinks they know the rules.

If you like off-limits romance with emotional history already baked in, We Shouldn't is a strong fit. These books are linked by mood and world more than by one ongoing plot, but reading in order still helps because the recurring connections make the town and its relationships feel fuller.
