Series background & context

The Clarke Brothers books are small-town mountain romances with a little extra bite. The setting is a rugged community tucked into the Appalachians, where family history matters, grudges last too long, and everybody knows when trouble is coming long before the first punch lands.

At the center are the Clarke brothers, Aiden, Dominic, and Ethan. They're tough, guarded, and used to carrying old hurt around like it's part of the furniture. Each book gives one brother his own love story, but the larger family dynamic matters too. These men grew up in the same hard place, under the same pressure, and that shared history shapes every decision they make.

The first book, Lie to Me, brings in an outsider and throws her into a local fight over development and the future of the mountains. After that, the series digs deeper into the town's old wounds. Swear to Me turns a long-running feud into a full-blown romance problem, while Run to Me adds more danger with an investigation, old secrets, and the sense that this town has never really settled down.

That family feud is the spine of the series.

What makes these books work is the push and pull between rough surroundings and vulnerable characters. The mountains are beautiful, but they also feel isolated. Privacy is hard to find, tempers run hot, and loyalty can look a lot like stubbornness. Monroe uses that setting well. The cabins, back roads, work sites, and town politics all feed the tension instead of just sitting in the background.

These are romance novels first, but they also lean into conflict outside the couple. There are land disputes, class differences, community pressure, and questions about whether the past should keep deciding the future. The heroes are protective and gruff. The heroines tend to arrive with their own goals, their own pride, and very little patience for mountain-man attitude.

If you like small-town romance with growly brothers, old family mess, and a setting that feels wild around the edges, this series is a good fit. The books are connected closely enough that reading in order gives the fullest picture, especially if you want to watch the Clarke family heal while each brother gets his turn.
