1

Resurrection

by Robert Asprin

2004

This opening Wartorn novel throws readers into a brutal fantasy conflict shaped by armies, ambition, and dangerous magic. In a world this bloodied, even death may not stay simple.

2

Obliteration

by Robert Asprin

2006

The war grows harsher and the choices grow uglier in this second Wartorn novel. Power is escalating, the body count is rising, and victory is starting to look a lot like ruin.

Series background & context

The Wartorn books sit on a darker shelf than the Myth or Phule novels. This is military fantasy, not comic fantasy, and the emphasis is on war, damage, command decisions, and what power looks like when armies are already in motion.

Even without leaning on every plot detail, the shape of the series is clear. These books are built around large conflict and the people trapped inside it, soldiers, leaders, rivals, and survivors who cannot simply joke their way out. Magic matters, but it is not cozy or decorative. It belongs to the machinery of destruction and control.

That makes the tone harsher and more direct. The series is interested in campaigns, shifting loyalties, and the cost of escalation. Death is not abstract here, and neither is the temptation to use ever more extreme means to win. The titles, Resurrection and Obliteration, tell you a lot about the scale the books are willing to reach for.

If you mostly know Asprin from his lighter work, this sequence can be a surprise. It shows the same instinct for momentum and readable plotting, but aimed at a much grimmer kind of story. Expect battles, uneasy alliances, and a world where victory may solve less than anyone hopes.
