Series background & context

Vorans and Vampires brings Donald Wigboldy’s fantasy into the modern world. The series follows Nick Steel, a voran and monster hunter who works in the shadows to keep supernatural creatures, and the people hunting them, from exposing a hidden world.

Nick is not a simple monster killer. He can still see the humanity in people changed by curses, and he has a vampire clan among his allies. That tension shapes the series. Nick must protect ordinary people from creatures that become dangerous, but he also has to protect supernatural beings from panic, exploitation, and each other.

Secrecy is part of the job.

In Voran the Night Guardian, werewolves and vampires are still treated as stories from films and books by the public. Nick’s work takes him to the Chicago area after a girl is kidnapped by werewolves living outside the city. At the same time, a new vampire clan arrives, recruits recklessly, and threatens to start a conflict that could expose everyone.

The second book, Standing Before Monsters, continues the idea of a vampire hunter whose work is tangled up with the creatures he is supposed to track. The series leans on the question of where the line falls between a monster and a person, especially when hunger for power, fear, and old rivalries push groups toward violence.

Chicago gives the stories a grounded setting.

This is urban fantasy with vampires, werewolves, hidden clans, kidnappings, and territorial disputes. The danger comes from both supernatural violence and the possibility that the secret world will break into public view. Nick’s connections make the conflicts personal, since his allies can become targets and the people he hunts are not always easy to dismiss as inhuman.

The tone is action-oriented and supernatural, with an emphasis on investigation and competing loyalties. Readers who enjoy modern monster stories but want a protagonist caught between protection and compassion should find plenty to work with here.

Start with Voran the Night Guardian, then read Standing Before Monsters. The first book introduces Nick, the vorans, his vampire allies, and the hidden supernatural balance that the second book continues to test.
