Adam is a transfer hockey player with NHL ambitions and a schedule that already feels overloaded before he lands in an improv class he does not want and does not think he can survive. Kolby is a theater student who is much more at home with performance, chaos, and saying exactly what he thinks. That setup gives the book its spark right away. Adam needs help. Kolby is in a position to give it. Neither one is especially prepared for the attraction that arrives with the tutoring.

The chemistry shows up early, long before either of them has a neat plan for it.

What makes the story work is that the romance is not only about attraction. Adam is trying to manage school, sport, and a future he takes very seriously, and part of that management includes deciding how visible he wants to be. Kolby has no patience for being reduced to a secret or a side note in someone else's carefully controlled life. That difference matters. It gives the relationship tension that is emotional rather than manufactured, and it makes the push and pull between them feel earned.

The theater piece keeps the book lively. Improv is not just a joke setup or a random class requirement. It becomes a way of pushing Adam out of rehearsed answers and into the discomfort of reacting honestly in the moment. Paired with the hockey background, where discipline and instinct are both everything, it creates a neat contrast. Kyle clearly enjoys writing that sports-and-arts collision, and it gives the book more personality than a standard campus romance.

The Vino & Veritas setting adds warmth around the edges, especially through the sense of found community and the easy assumption that queer love stories belong in the center of the page. But the heart of Showstopper is really Adam and Kolby learning how to be seen clearly by each other. There is banter, heat, and some very funny moments, but there is also real feeling under it.

If you like MM romance with opposites attract energy, campus life, and a balance of warmth and tension, this is a very easy recommendation. It has hockey, stage lights, cider dates, and enough emotional honesty to make the whole shared-world setup feel personal instead of gimmicky.
