Victorian Serenade Books in Order

The Victorian Serenade books are Blackwell's earliest full-length series, and they carry a little more danger than her later village novels. The first book, Like a River Glorious, throws Rachel Jones into the orbit of con artists who plan to swindle a wealthy recluse, Adam Burke. From the start, the series is interested in deception, compromised choices, and the cost of doing the right thing when your safety depends on keeping quiet.

This is the sharpest-edged corner of Blackwell's fiction.

The books are connected, but not in a simple one-couple way. Measures of Grace continues with Corrine, one of the earlier swindlers, as she tries to turn away from her old life while someone else nurses a grudge and plans revenge. Jewels for a Crown shifts toward nursing and family strain when Jenny Price, fresh from Florence Nightingale's training, is sent to care for a wealthy merchant's epileptic daughter. Song Of A Soul then moves into music, following Deborah Burke as she trains with the famous singer Clarisse Pella and discovers that talent can open doors to moral trouble as well as opportunity.

That changing focus gives the series a nice range. One book leans into fraud and emotional captivity, another into repentance and danger, another into caregiving inside a troubled household, and the last into artistic ambition. The links between books come through family, consequence, and the sense that earlier choices keep echoing into later lives.

The romances matter, but they are not the whole engine.

Blackwell keeps bringing her characters back to conscience. Can a person change after living badly? What do you do with bitterness, guilt, or the need for approval? How do you stay kind when a situation is unfair and exhausting? Those questions sit alongside period detail, large houses, London and Cambridge settings, and the very Victorian pressure to appear respectable even when everything underneath is unstable.

Compared with the Gresham books, this series feels less cozy and more dramatic. Illness, revenge, false identities, and hard moral tests show up often. Even so, the tone is still warm rather than bleak, and the faith element is central to how the characters make sense of what happens to them. If you want Blackwell at her most suspenseful, while still getting the family feeling and emotional sincerity that define her work, Victorian Serenade is the place to start.
