Series background & context

The Vicky Hill books begin in the Devon town of Gipping-on-Plym, where Vicky is stuck writing obituaries for the local paper and badly wants a proper front page story. She is ambitious, impulsive, romantically hopeful, and forever a step away from embarrassment. That mix gives the series most of its energy.

Vicky is not a polished detective. She blunders, speculates, and gets distracted, but she is also stubborn and far more observant than people think. In A Vicky Hill Exclusive!, Scoop!, and Expose!, she keeps finding herself at the edge of deaths that do not feel accidental, and once she starts tugging at the loose threads the whole town begins to unravel.

The setting matters as much as the crimes. Gipping-on-Plym is the kind of place where local customs, village rivalries, and odd competitions can drive a whole plot. Hedge jumping, snail racing, Morris dancing, and funeral gossip all feel normal here. Dennison uses that local color for comedy, but also to show how a small community remembers everything, judges quickly, and hides plenty behind good manners.

Vicky's personal life is never neatly separated from her reporting life.

A recurring thread through the series is her family secret. Vicky is the daughter of a notorious criminal known as the Fog, which means calling the police is not always as simple as it should be. That shadow hangs over the books and gives the mysteries a slightly sharper edge than a purely gentle cozy. Add in her rivalry with fellow reporter Annabel Lake, plus a string of confusing men, and Vicky is usually juggling several disasters at once.

What makes these books fun is the tone. They are cozy mysteries, but not especially placid ones. They have a tabloid streak, a lot of comic misunderstanding, and a heroine who keeps charging ahead even when she plainly should stop and think first. If you like capable but messy leads, village gossip, and mysteries with a bit of screwball energy, this is the appeal.

They are best read in order.

The cases do stand on their own, but the running jokes, feuds, romantic entanglements, and family complications build book by book. Starting with A Vicky Hill Exclusive! lets you watch Vicky grow from a frustrated obituary writer into someone who cannot stop chasing trouble, even when trouble is very clearly chasing her back.
