Author bio

Vera Nazarian was born in Moscow in 1966 and left the Soviet Union as a child with her parents during the Cold War. Her family reached the United States in 1976 by way of Lebanon, Greece, and Italy, carrying only a couple of suitcases. That early journey, and the mix of Armenian and Russian culture she grew up with, later fed the myths, languages, old worlds, and big questions in her fiction.

She settled in Southern California, graduated from Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood in 1984, and studied English and psychology at Pomona College. After earning her degree in 1988, she spent more than a decade working in high tech.

But writing had started much earlier.

Nazarian began writing in English as soon as she learned the language, and she kept at it through school. At 17, she sold her first short story to the second Sword and Sorceress anthology. For years, she balanced a day job with writing, making art, and music in the evenings. It was a demanding schedule, but it built the foundation for a wide-ranging body of work.

Her first novel, Dreams of the Compass Rose, arrived in 2002. It is a connected, story-shaped fantasy set across deserts, islands, dreams, and places that often feel half remembered. A year later came Lords of Rainbow, an epic romantic fantasy in a world without color. Both books show her interest in fairy-tale logic, ancient history, desire, and the ways people make sense of a strange world.

Then she took a hard turn into playful territory.

The Supernatural Jane Austen books, including Mansfield Park and Mummies, Northanger Abbey and Angels and Dragons, and Pride and Platypus, remix Austen-style social comedy with monsters, curses, and absurd complications. Nazarian has also written collections such as Salt of the Air and After the Sundial, along with short fiction that moves between fantasy, science fiction, myth, and fable.

Her largest ongoing fictional world is The Atlantis Grail. Beginning with Qualify, the series follows teenage scholar Gwenevere Lark as an asteroid threatens Earth and the descendants of Atlantis offer a narrow route to survival. The books combine competition, space travel, political pressure, romance, family loyalty, and an enormous amount of Atlantean history. Later volumes include Compete, Win, and Survive, plus companion novellas and reference books for readers who want to stay in that universe.

Across all these projects, Nazarian returns to questions about identity, freedom, love, duty, death, and the stories people inherit. Her characters may face monsters, royal courts, dying worlds, or impossible rules, but they still have to decide what kind of person they want to be.

She is also an artist, musician, and publisher. After many years in Los Angeles, she moved to a small town in Vermont, where she lives with cats and continues to write.
