Manhunt

by Christian Jacq

Series background & context

Vengeance Of The Gods is a compact two book cycle that reads like a pursuit thriller set on the eve of catastrophe. Instead of pharaohs at the height of their power, Jacq writes about a kingdom that has almost run out of time.

The series opens in 518 BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Amasis II. Egypt is still independent, but Persian armies are pressing at the borders and the court is full of uneasy compromises. Kel, a young scribe newly admitted to a prestigious guild of interpreters, thinks his future is secure. A single night changes everything when he arrives at work to find his colleagues murdered and himself framed as the killer.(fantasticfiction.com)

In Manhunt he flees with a mysterious encrypted papyrus under his arm, suspecting that whatever is written there has cost several people their lives. On the road he is helped by Bebon, an actor whose easygoing manner hides real courage, and Nitis, a priestess of Neith who becomes both partner and anchor. Together they dodge officials, spies and hired killers while Kel tries to understand why the gods, and human plotters, have chosen him as the point where everything converges.

The Divine Worshipper continues straight on. Kel and his companions reach Thebes, where he comes under the protection of the city’s spiritual leader, an elderly woman known as the Divine Worshipper. With her help he works to clear his name and expose the forces behind the massacre, even as the larger story turns dark. The Persians cross the frontier, internal betrayal weakens the army, and readers know that historically Egypt is about to lose its independence for generations.(en.wikipedia.org)

Throughout both books Jacq plays with the idea promised by the title. When rulers defy maat, the principle of balance and justice, the “vengeance of the gods” is not a lightning bolt from the sky but the slow, grinding result of human choices, cowardice and greed. Kel’s innocence or guilt matters, but so does the question of what kind of country will emerge from the crisis, if any.

In tone this cycle is leaner and more urgent than his big epics. Scenes jump quickly from alleyways to courtrooms, prisons and hidden shrines. There is less time for panorama and more for narrow escapes, coded messages and moral dilemmas. If you like the investigative side of Judge of Egypt but want a shorter, higher pressure story, Vengeance Of The Gods is a good fit.
