Velma Martinez, better known as Velveteen, used to be one of those child heroes. She got out, or at least got out as much as anyone ever really can. When the main story begins, she is trying to build some kind of civilian life after the damage done by the Super Patriots system. The trouble is that institutions built to exploit children do not just shrug and let their best-known assets walk away.

What follows is part superhero adventure and part recovery story. There are fights, powers, costumes, villains, and alternate realities, but there is also paperwork, trauma, media manipulation, and the long weird process of reclaiming a self that was designed for public use. McGuire never loses the satirical edge. The idea that heroism can be franchised, focus-grouped, and weaponized against the people inside it is treated as absurd, and also as something close to believable.

Velveteen herself keeps it grounded.

She is angry, funny, hurt, and much sharper than the adults around her ever wanted her to be. The supporting cast helps too. Friends, ex-teammates, rivals, and fellow escapees make the world feel less like one person raging at a machine and more like a community trying to survive the machine together.
