Cultivating Chaos

by William D Arand

2018

Talented martial artist Ash is yanked from Earth into a cultivation world where the strong fly and the weak die. After years scraping by as a powerless citizen, he discovers an ancient Hall and a snarky guide that offer him a dangerous path to real power.

Series background & context

VeilVerse: Cultivating Chaos takes Arand’s love of systems and drops it into a martial arts cultivation setting. Ash starts as a talented but otherwise ordinary fighter from Earth with a rough high school experience and a complicated family. A portal tears him out of his normal life and throws him into a world where cultivators can harden their skin like diamond, punch the air into flame, and fly if their power is high enough.

For three hard years he survives as a powerless citizen, working, training, and supporting the adoptive family that took him in. Then he discovers an ancient treasure—the Hall—and the sardonic voice of Locke, who offers him a path to awakening his dantian and climbing the long ladder of cultivation. From that moment on, Ash’s choices pull him into sect politics, deadly rivalries, and the attention of forces that see him as a pawn in a much larger game.

The series follows his step by step rise, from his first breakthroughs to prison realms, royal courts, and conflicts that cross worlds. It keeps the familiar beats of cultivation fiction—bottlenecks, tribulations, dao insights—while mixing in GameLit sensibilities and crossovers with other VeilVerse stories. Expect long fights, detailed power systems, and a protagonist who is stubborn enough to keep walking a path that might have been laid out for him by cosmic beings he’s never met.
