Vaughn C Hardacker was born in Caribou, Maine, and much of his life has stayed tied to the far north of the state, even when work and travel took him elsewhere. At seventeen he left home, drifted around the Northeast for a year, and then joined the US Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam, and that background later fed the military detail in his fiction, along with his interest in how training, violence, and memory keep following people long after they think they are done with them.

After the Marines, he came back to Maine, married, and started building a second life. He studied at Northern Maine Community College, the University of Maine, and Southern New Hampshire University, then spent around thirty years working in high tech. Those years took him to the Boston area and later to Chicago, where Wang Laboratories sent him for work, before he eventually returned to northern Maine. After his wife's death, he moved back to Aroostook County, where he could afford to live and write full-time.

Writing started early.

Hardacker has said he was turning out terrible vampire stories in junior high, and he sounds genuinely relieved that none of them survived. As a young reader he got hooked on mysteries after reading Mickey Spillane's I, the Jury, and later read Louis L'Amour heavily while in the Marines. He spent years learning the slow way, through rejection, critique, and active writer groups that pushed him to keep showing up with new pages.

It was not a quick road to publication. He has talked openly about nearly giving up, then getting jolted back into the fight at a high school reunion when old classmates asked why they were not seeing his books on shelves. He took the question seriously, got more involved with crime-writing organizations, and kept working. Even then, it still took years to land a book deal, which makes his debut feel less like luck and more like stubbornness paying off.

Sniper, published in 2014, introduced Mike Houston, a Boston homicide detective and former Marine sniper, and it set the tone for a lot of what followed: people under pressure, violence that feels close, and moral lines that never stay neat for long. The Fisherman brought Houston back for another grim case, while Black Orchid and My Brother's Keeper follow private investigator Ed Traynor through missing-person and murder investigations that open into bigger criminal networks. Hardacker's heroes are often working men with scars, old loyalties, and just enough grit to keep moving.

Maine is never just scenery in these books.

In Wendigo, Hardacker moves into supernatural territory without leaving behind his taste for danger and isolation, using the winter woods of northern Maine as a real source of pressure and fear. The Exchange follows former state trooper Dylan Thomas into a kidnapping case, and Ripped Off introduces retired hitman Ian Connah, a man who learns that retirement is not nearly as secure as he thought. Hardacker has also said that real cases often spark his fiction, including the DC sniper killings, the Black Dahlia case, and the crimes of Robert Pickton.

Alongside the novels, he has published short fiction and stayed active in writing circles, including Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, and the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. Several of his books have been finalists for Maine Literary Awards, including Sniper, The Fisherman, and Wendigo. He also writes and blogs from Maine, which suits the strong sense of place running through his work.

These days he lives in Stockholm, Maine, and has written about loving life there near what feels like the edge of the map. That fits his fiction. Again and again, he writes about people who think they can outrun old mistakes, only to find the past waiting in a city alley, a frozen back road, or deep in the woods.
