Valerie Inkerman Investigates Books in Order

The Valerie Inkerman books are among A.R. Winters's earlier mysteries, and they read a little differently from the later culinary and small-town series. These are still light, accessible books, but they lean more directly into the private-investigator setup.

Valerie is not stumbling onto crime by accident. She is trying to make a go of investigation work.

That matters from the start in Don't Be A Stranger, where a waitressing gig at a wealthy Hamptons party turns into a murder case and Valerie's roommate Jerry becomes the prime suspect. Valerie has to use her limited experience, her nerve, and a lot of legwork to clear his name. In Fake It Till You Make It, she and Jerry are working together more directly, looking into the suspicious death of a business tycoon that the police would rather write off as suicide.

So the series has more of a city-and-clients feel than Winters's later books. The suspects tend to come from wealthier circles, the cases often begin with a formal investigation request, and Valerie has to operate a little more like a working detective than an amateur nosing around her own bakery or café. That gives the books a slightly different rhythm.

Jerry is important to the tone. His presence keeps the stories from becoming too procedural, and the partnership gives Valerie someone to bounce off when leads go cold or things get ridiculous. Winters is already interested in humorous banter, messy loyalties, and a heroine who is competent but still learning, so even these early books feel connected to the rest of her work.

If you want the roots of the later A.R. Winters style, this is an interesting place to look. The books are breezy, quick to read, and less wrapped in food-and-community atmosphere than the bigger series that followed. But the essentials are already there: a likable female sleuth, a knotty suspect list, some offbeat humor, and a mystery that keeps Valerie moving until she finally sees the shape of the truth.
