That puts her on a collision course with the town's festival culture, the nearby woods, and a long list of people who stood to benefit from the victim's death.

That happens in Loaf or Death, when Aunt Betsy becomes the prime suspect after another bakery owner dies, and again in Cakes and Mistakes, where Jean has to defend a sweet local baker while uncovering secrets that ripple through the whole town. The mysteries are personal, which helps the series avoid feeling like a string of disconnected puzzles.

Jean is a good guide through this world because she is persistent without turning into a superhero. She is balancing work, family, money problems, and local expectations while trying to follow clues. That makes the series feel grounded even when the setup includes festival campers, cryptid talk, and the occasional very dramatic suspect list.

There is a slightly quirkier flavor here than in some of Winters's other culinary cozies, and that is part of the appeal. The woods, the town events, and the local legends give the stories more texture than a simple bakery-counter mystery would have on its own.

If you want cozy mysteries with food, family loyalty, and a small touch of oddball folklore, this series hits a very pleasant middle ground.
