Series background & context
Valenshek Legacy sits beside the Shadow Grove books rather than directly inside their main action, which makes it a nice option if you want connected-world flavor without needing every earlier series first. The setup is simple and strong, every four years the criminal underworld runs a deadly competition known only as the Game.
And Hermes plans to win it.
That gives the series a more focused shape than some of Tate James's broader, multi-love-interest worlds. This is an M/F romance with crime, art, deception, and reputation all tangled together. Hermes is already a legend in his corner of the underworld, and that confidence is part of the appeal. He is not learning how to be dangerous. He has been dangerous for a long time.
What complicates things is the art-world angle. Stolen paintings, forgeries, studio access, and long-running obsession give the series a more elegant texture than a straight gang story. Heist starts with Hermes chasing a legendary painting and colliding with the woman standing in his way. Forgery then turns the spotlight toward a heroine whose careful plans unravel when betrayal exposes her own secret talent. Restoration pushes both of them into the endgame, where love, legacy, and revenge are no longer separable.
The title words tell you a lot about the mood. These books are about theft, craft, appearance, and the things people build in secret. Even the romance has that quality, hidden motives first, real feeling second, and both arriving with consequences.
If you like the idea of Tate James writing closer to an art-heist romance, with criminal-games tension and a more contained central pairing, Valenshek Legacy is a good pick. It keeps her pace and sense of danger, but filters them through canvas, deception, and the pressure of living up to a family name.
