Series background & context

The Utterly Dark books are historical fantasy adventures set in an invented version of the nineteenth-century British Isles. Their world includes remote islands, old maps, strange folklore, and places where the boundary between the ordinary world and something far older can wear thin.

Utterly Dark lives on the island of Wildsea with her guardian, Andrew Dark. He is a Watcher, someone whose job is to look toward the western horizon for islands that should not be there. Utterly has grown up with sea stories, unanswered questions about her past, and a strong sense that the world is bigger and stranger than most adults admit.

Then the impossible starts coming closer.

In Utterly Dark and the Face of the Deep, Utterly is pulled into a mystery involving the Hidden Lands and a frightening presence known as the Gorm. Utterly Dark and the Heart of the Wild shifts the action to Summertide, where old magic seems rooted in the woods and soil. In Utterly Dark and the Tides of Time, the series keeps following the consequences of earlier bargains and secrets.

The setting matters as much as the plot. Wild seas, cliffs, caves, old churches, forests, and weather all help create a story that feels part mystery and part folklore. Utterly is brave, but she is still a child trying to understand who she is and whom she can trust. Her friendships and family ties give the danger some real emotional weight.

These are eerie rather than relentlessly frightening books. They suit readers who like legends, ghostly atmosphere, natural settings, and adventures where magic has rules that are only slowly revealed.

Start with Utterly Dark and the Face of the Deep. Each book has its own central mystery, but Utterly's history and the threat behind the hidden islands develop across the series.
