Series background & context

The Goblins trilogy is a comic fantasy series set around Clovenstone, a fortress packed with bickering goblins, abandoned magic, questionable rulers, and old dangers that have not stayed as buried as everyone hoped.

Skarper is a goblin who wants more from life than fighting, looting, and doing what he is told.

In Goblins, Skarper gets tangled up with Henwyn, a human boy who wants to be a hero, and Princess Eluned, who has her own ideas about being rescued. Their problems lead them toward trolls, sorcerers, monsters, and the lingering influence of the terrible Lych Lord. The book enjoys turning familiar fantasy expectations sideways.

Goblins vs. Dwarves continues the trouble when Clovenstone's goblins meet their traditional enemies. Rivalries, misunderstandings, and an escalating conflict put Skarper and his friends in the middle. Goblin Quest brings the trilogy's characters back together for another dangerous mission as the fate of their chaotic world becomes harder to ignore.

The humor comes from the goblins' practical, argumentative approach to almost everything. Reeve gives them plenty of bad habits, but he also lets readers see their loyalties and fears. Skarper is cleverer and kinder than his world expects him to be, while Henwyn slowly learns that heroic stories are more complicated when real people are involved.

Clovenstone is full of monsters and magic, but it is not a polished fairy-tale kingdom. It is muddy, noisy, crowded, and often ridiculous. That messy setting makes the series a good fit for readers who enjoy quests without overly solemn heroes.

Start with Goblins. The books have separate adventures, but relationships and long-running threats build from one volume to the next, so reading in order gives the jokes and emotional payoffs more room to land.
