Series background & context
The Until the End of the World series is where many readers first meet Sarah Lyons Fleming's world. Across three novels and a bridging novella, it follows Cassie Forrest and her tight knit circle of friends from Brooklyn sidewalks to remote cabins, farms, and finally a desperate trek toward Alaska.
When the story opens, Cassie is a painter in her twenties who has been drifting since the death of her survivalist parents. She has broken off her engagement to Adrian, is dating the wrong guy, and keeps promising herself she will get it together soon. The day she finally decides to change her life happens to be the day a new virus starts turning people into zombies.
With warning sirens blaring and infection spreading fast, Cassie, her roommates, and a few extra tagalongs race out of New York City toward the rural Pennsylvania cabin her parents stocked for emergencies. The first book, Until the End of the World, mixes road trip chaos, found family dynamics, and the grim work of defending a small safe haven from both the undead and dangerous humans.
Life at Kingdom Come Farm in And After brings a different rhythm. Instead of constant flight, Cassie and company plant crops, build fences, fall in love, and raise kids, all while keeping an eye on the fences and listening to Safe Zone radio broadcasts. The farm is cozy on the surface but ringed with threats, and the group has to decide how to balance caution with the need to keep living.
The novella So Long, Lollipops slots between the first and second books, following Peter in the aftermath of a devastating separation. Seen through his eyes, the world feels more stripped down and lonely, and his story adds extra weight to the choices the group makes later.
In All the Stars in the Sky, the last novel, the survivors are forced back onto the road. Their long planned escape route leads through Canada toward a final Safe Zone in Alaska, a journey that throws them into blizzards, zombie swarms, and encounters with both generous strangers and outright villains. The physical distance mirrors the emotional distance Cassie has to cross as she mourns what she has lost and tries to believe there is still something worth reaching for.
Throughout the series, the focus stays on relationships, gallows humor, and the exhausting work of keeping hope alive when every map is out of date. There are brutal moments, but there are also late night talks, running jokes, and small, tender scenes that remind you why the characters fight so hard to stay alive. For the fullest experience, read in order starting with Until the End of the World, then So Long, Lollipops, And After, and finally All the Stars in the Sky.
