The follow-up, Deathly Quiet, deepens that conflict instead of resetting it. Annie has found love, but love is not enough to cancel destiny. The series leans hard into that impossible choice: can she refuse the role laid out for her, or will that refusal destroy the people she is trying to protect? Reeves keeps the emotional stakes close and clear, which helps the more abstract ideas land.

What should you expect from Unlife? A darker tone than Cindy Eller. Less comedy, more dread. The magic here is not cute or convenient. It comes with inheritance, obligation, and the constant feeling that the wrong decision could cost Annie everyone she cares about.

It is only two books, but they are connected tightly enough that you should treat them as a single arc. Start with Deathly Still, then move straight to Deathly Quiet. If you like YA-leaning urban fantasy that puts one girl's struggle with fate at the center, this is one of Reeves's strongest places to start.
