Series background & context

The Underworld Chronicles is Jennifer A. Nielsen's funny middle grade fantasy series about Elliot Penster, a regular kid who accidentally gets pulled into a hidden world of Brownies, Goblins, Pixies, Fairies, and other creatures with very strong opinions. It is lighter and sillier than many of Nielsen's later fantasies, but it already shows her love of unlikely young heroes.

It begins on Halloween night in Elliot and the Goblin War. Elliot thinks he is helping someone in a costume. He is not. His good deed draws him into a conflict between Brownies and Goblins, and before long he is named King of the Brownies, which is not exactly the kind of promotion most kids are hoping for.

The joke is that Elliot is both important and deeply unprepared.

The series uses an intrusive, playful narrator, warning readers about dangers in a tongue-in-cheek way. That style makes the Underworld feel scary to Elliot but funny to the reader. Goblins may be dangerous, demons may be worse, and magical creatures may be plotting, but the books are built for laughs as much as suspense.

In Elliot and the Pixie Plot, the trouble grows beyond Goblins. Elliot is pulled into conflict involving Pixies, Fairies, and the dark threat of Kovol. By Elliot and the Last Underworld War, the stakes become much bigger, with creatures of the Underworld forced toward a final showdown.

The real-world side matters too. Elliot has family chaos, school problems, and bullies to deal with. His adventures underground connect to a simple but useful theme: being brave does not mean feeling ready. Sometimes it means standing up even when you would rather hide.

Start with Elliot and the Goblin War. The books are short, quick, and best read in order, especially for younger readers who enjoy fantasy with goofy danger and a narrator who keeps poking them in the ribs.
