Twisted Love is one of Walters's darker relationship series. It starts with a classic looking setup, a college student meets a dangerously magnetic guy, then immediately makes that setup messier. Aubrey Duncan comes into the story carrying grief and guilt after losing her younger sister. She starts over at Longwood University and throws herself into helping others, especially through an addiction support group.

That is where Maxx Demelo gets under her skin. Maxx is smart, charming, and deeply unsteady. He hides a serious drug problem behind attitude and control, and the more Aubrey sees of him, the harder it gets for her to keep clean lines between compassion, attraction, and self-destruction. He draws her into the underground club scene and into a version of herself she does not fully trust. Walters makes that slide feel gradual, which is part of what gives the series its edge.

This is not a tidy rescue story.

The second book, Follow Me Back, makes that clear. Instead of pretending love solves everything, the series keeps going after rehab, separation, shame, and the question of whether two people who hurt each other badly can build something healthier the second time around. That choice gives Twisted Love its real shape. These books are not about the thrill of falling alone. They are about aftermath, relapse risk, boundaries, and the slow, frustrating work of trying to change.

The setting helps. Part of the story lives in classrooms, campus spaces, and support meetings. The other part lives in clubs, late nights, pills, secrecy, and the places people go when they do not want to sit with themselves. Aubrey stands between those worlds, and Maxx keeps dragging both of them across the line. That creates a constant sense of instability, because even the tender moments feel like they could tip the wrong way.

If you are coming to this series for a swoony college romance, it is worth knowing that Walters is aiming for something rougher. Aubrey and Maxx are drawn together, but they are also both carrying damage that distorts how they love. The tension comes from watching them want each other, resist each other, and then face what that wanting costs when addiction is not some distant problem but the center of the room.
