Twists

by Colin Youngman

2017

This anthology gathers Youngman's short Twist stories into one volume, moving from psychological suspense to courtroom drama, surreal fantasy, and family conflict. Each tale is built around pressure, misdirection, and a final turn.

Series background & context

The Twist series is Colin Youngman's early run of short, standalone fiction. It is not built around one detective, one family, or one long plot arc. The connecting idea is simpler: each story sets up a tense situation, then turns it in a direction the reader is not meant to see too soon.

That makes the series a good place to see Youngman working in a smaller space. The books are closer to novelettes and novellas than full-length crime novels, so they get to the problem quickly. A marriage is in trouble. A refugee meets a strange companion. A murder trial reaches its final day. A family cracks under the weight of its own damage.

Dead Lines is a psychological suspense story set around a rural hotel weekend. Jennifer North wants to repair her marriage to Stephen, while Stephen is trying to deal with a threat that may cost him his life. It is domestic drama with a darker clock ticking underneath.

The Refugee: Fantasy or Prophecy? shifts the mood. It follows Sam, a displaced man whose meeting with an angel creates a strange conversation about fear, survival, mortality, and what people choose to believe. It has more of a surreal, speculative feel than the later Ryan Jarrod books.

The series keeps changing shape.

Brittle Justice turns to the courtroom, following the final day of a murder trial where the evidence looks strong but the accused may be innocent. A Fall Before Pride moves into family drama, asking whether a disabled child can help repair a household being pulled apart by pride and resentment. Twists gathers the short-form material into one anthology-style volume.

What ties these stories together is not genre, but structure. Youngman uses tight casts, compressed time frames, and moral pressure to push ordinary people toward uncomfortable choices. If the Ryan Jarrod books are the wide-angle version of his crime writing, Twist is the close-up version: smaller rooms, fewer characters, and a trapdoor somewhere under the floor.

The best starting point is Dead Lines, since it introduces the series' taste for compact suspense. After that, readers can follow the published order or dip into whichever premise sounds most interesting.
