The Menagerie books take a very old fantasy wish and give it practical problems. Yes, there is a hidden place full of unicorns, dragons, phoenixes, griffins, and other creatures from stories. But it is not a dreamy nowhere-land. It is a secret preserve in Xanadu, Wyoming, and somebody has to feed the basilisks, calm the dangerous residents, and stop the entire thing from spilling out into the ordinary world.

That is where Logan Wilde and Zoe Kahn come in. Logan starts as the outsider who stumbles into the truth. Zoe has grown up inside it, which means she knows the rules, the routines, and the risks that come with caring for magical animals. Their friendship is one of the best things in the series because it is built on shared problem solving instead of instant trust.

Each book gives them a new crisis. In The Menagerie, escaped griffin cubs threaten to expose the whole operation. Dragon on Trial shifts into murder-mystery territory when a dragon is blamed for killing the goose that lays golden eggs. By Krakens and Lies, the trouble inside the Menagerie has grown into outright sabotage, and Logan and Zoe are no longer just fixing accidents. They are trying to stop someone from tearing the place apart.

What makes the trilogy work is that the creatures are not just decoration. A kraken, a griffin, or a dragon is never there only because fantasy says one should be. The books care about what these creatures need, how humans fail them, and what kind of responsibility comes with keeping a secret sanctuary alive.

The tone lands in a nice middle ground between wonder and panic. There is plenty of magic, but there is also family pressure, detective work, and the constant worry that a hidden world can be ruined very quickly by greed, fear, or one bad decision. Readers who like creature fantasy but want more mystery and less prophecy will probably have a good time here.

It also helps that the books stay playful without feeling flimsy. The Menagerie is delightful, but it is never perfectly safe, and that balance gives the series its energy.
