The books are sexy and funny, but they are not weightless. Blake likes characters with rough edges and softer cores, especially heroes who may look cocky from the outside and heroines who are not quick to trust them. She also likes giving those characters real obstacles, grief, bad timing, self-protection, old mistakes, and fear of being seen, rather than easy misunderstandings that vanish in a chapter.
