Series background & context
The Troy trilogy shifts from secondary worlds to an alternative Bronze Age Mediterranean. Gemmell keeps many of the familiar names from myth Troy, Mykene, Hektor, Andromache, Odysseus and Achilles but treats them as rounded human beings caught in the grinding gears of politics, trade and prophecy.
In Lord of the Silver Bow we meet Helikaon, a ruthless yet oddly idealistic sea captain and prince of Dardania, whose burning of enemy ships has earned him a fearsome reputation. At Troy, Prince Hektor tries to steer his city between aggressive Mykene ambitions and his father's growing instability, while Andromache, a strong willed priestess from Thebe, struggles with the role others expect her to play. Rumours swirl about an Eagle Child who will never lose a battle and about the shield and bow blessed by the goddess.
Shield of Thunder opens with war looming over the Great Green. Kings and raiders gather fleets, some seeking plunder, others revenge. New figures such as runaway priestess Piria and warrior companions Kalliades and Banokles are pulled into the tightening web. Odysseus, ever the storyteller and schemer, tries to keep his own island safe while being drawn toward a conflict he wanted to avoid.
In Fall of Kings the long threatened war comes fully into the open. Hektor leads daring cavalry raids, Helikaon hammers Mykene supply lines at sea and Achilles and his Myrmidons carve a brutal legend on the battlefield. Inside Troy's walls Andromache juggles her roles as wife, mother, healer and defender, navigating court intrigue and the madness of King Priam as the city moves toward its fateful stand.
Rather than lean on overt divine intervention, the trilogy lets belief and prophecy work through human choices. Battles are vivid and costly, small acts of kindness sit beside atrocities and no one emerges untouched. It is still heroic fantasy, but grounded in mud, salt water and the stubborn determination of people who see disaster coming and fight anyway.
