Wolf in Shadow

by David Gemmell

1987

Centuries after a cataclysm, gunman Jon Shannow, the Jerusalem Man, rides a broken world in search of the lost city of God. His hunt leads him into clashes with Hellborn zealots, mutant beasts and the corrupted magic of the Sipstrassi stones.

Series background & context

The Jon Shannow trilogy takes the Sipstrassi mythos into a broken far future that feels part western and part biblical fever dream. Centuries after an event known as the Fall knocked the earth from its orbit and drowned old nations, scattered communities huddle in the Plague Lands. Bandits, mutant beasts and cruel warlords prey on pilgrims, while half remembered fragments of history have hardened into strange religions.

Into this rides Jon Shannow, tall, gaunt and relentless, known to most as the Jerusalem Man. Armed with a brace of pistols and a battered faith, he makes his living hunting brigands yet cares more about tracking down the lost city of Jerusalem, believing that only there will his soul finally find rest. People hire him, fear him and sometimes worship the legend that is already growing around his name.

In Wolf in Shadow Shannow crosses deserts and ruined coasts while a Hellborn army marches to remake the world in blood. The Sipstrassi stones are back, this time as the fuel for human sacrifice and terrible miracles, and Shannow is forced to decide what he is prepared to do to stop a new dark age.

The Last Guardian picks up a little later, with Shannow older and more worn, discovering that the world of his birth is linked by time gates to Atlantis thousands of years in the past. As Atlantean priests and exiles step into the Plague Lands, the story shifts between eras, making the fall of one civilization echo through the fate of the other.

In Bloodstone the horrors of the past have curdled into a theocracy. The Deacon and his Jerusalem Riders cleanse the world of mutants and so called Unbelievers, using Shannow's story as holy propaganda. When massacres in Pilgrim's Valley suggest the Jerusalem Man walks again, Shannow is drawn into a fight that pits him against fanaticism, otherworldly gods and the way his own legend has been used.

Taken together, the trilogy blends gunfights, apocalyptic visions and strange theology. It keeps the pace of a chase novel but circles back constantly to the cost of violence and the uneasy line between faith and fanaticism, with one haunted gunman always in the middle.
