Trollhunters
by Guillermo del Toro
2015
In quiet San Bernardino, shy teen Jim Sturges Jr. learns that local missing children legends are real when he stumbles into an underground war with flesh eating trolls. Chosen as a Trollhunter, he must balance school, friendship, and first love while facing monsters older than the town itself.
Series background & context
The Trollhunters books introduce one of Guillermo del Toro’s most straightforward heroes, and then throw him into anything but a straightforward situation. Jim Sturges Jr. starts as a fairly average kid in suburban California who worries about grades, bullies, and impressing his crush.
Under his town runs another world. For centuries, trolls have been snatching children and dragging them into a shadow war that most adults never see. There is also a tradition of defenders, the trollhunters who wield enchanted armor and weapons while trying to keep both realms from collapsing. Jim stumbles into that legacy almost by accident and discovers that his own family history is tangled up in the disappearances.
The prose novel Trollhunters, co written with Daniel Kraus, strikes a balance between gross out creature horror and the kind of awkward humor that comes with being a teenager. Jim’s best friend, Tubby, complains about gym class and cafeteria food in the same breath that he worries about getting eaten. Detention, dance tickets, and curfew sit next to toothy maws and ancient prophecies.
The wider Trollhunters material, including Tales of Arcadia tie ins, treats Arcadia Oaks as a hub where trolls, aliens, and wizards all eventually collide. Books and graphic novels in this strand often expand on episodes from the animated series, giving supporting characters their own moments and exploring earlier generations of trollhunters whose stories only get mentioned on screen.
What makes this series stand out is its refusal to talk down to younger readers. The monsters are frightening, the stakes can be lethal, and family relationships are complicated rather than neat. A protective parent might be keeping dangerous secrets. A joke cracked at the wrong moment can hurt as much as any claw.
At the same time, there is a strong streak of optimism. Jim and his friends win as often through loyalty and creative problem solving as through brute force. Troll allies are allowed to be funny, sad, jealous, and brave, not just comic relief. The books are clear that being chosen as a hero is a burden as well as an honor.
For readers who enjoy modern fantasy that takes both adolescence and monsters seriously, the Trollhunters line is an easy recommendation. It is a gateway into the larger Tales of Arcadia universe, but it also works on its own as a story about a kid who discovers that the worst thing under the bed might actually need his help.
